The Swachh Sabarmati Mahaabhiyan 2026 was launched at the Sabarmati Riverfront with an overwhelming public response, marking a major step towards environmental conservation and river rejuvenation.
More than 7,500 citizens participated in the cleanliness drive on its inaugural day, collectively removing around 68 tonnes of waste from the Sabarmati riverbed.
The campaign aims to eliminate plastic waste and other pollutants from the river, improve its ecological health, and promote a cleaner and greener environment along the Sabarmati.
The drive will continue until June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day, providing multiple opportunities for citizens to contribute to the initiative.
Organised jointly by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL), the campaign has invited participation from residents, non-governmental organisations, educational institutions, corporate bodies and civil society groups.
Volunteers are expected to take part in riverbed cleaning activities, waste collection drives and awareness programmes across various stretches of the river.
The cleanliness campaign was formally inaugurated by Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, along with Darshanaben Vaghela and Ahmedabad Mayor Hitesh Barot.
Officials said the initiative reflects a collective commitment towards preserving the Sabarmati River and fostering greater public awareness about environmental responsibility.
