The Gujarat High Court has declined to stay the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) road-widening project near the Narendra Modi Stadium and Sardar Patel Sports Complex in Motera.
A vacation bench headed by Justice L.S. Pirzada refused to grant interim relief to four petitioners who challenged AMC’s decision to widen an existing approach road into a 100-foot corridor. The petitioners contended that the project lacked a legitimate public purpose and was unnecessary.
Defending the move, AMC told the court that the road is a crucial access route to the Narendra Modi Stadium and Sardar Patel Sports Complex. The civic body said the infrastructure upgrade is important in view of Ahmedabad’s preparations for major international sporting events, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
AMC further submitted that all legal and procedural requirements had been complied with. Public objections were invited and duly considered, and the proposal received approval from the Standing Committee after deliberation. The corporation argued that there was no basis for judicial interference at the interim stage.
According to AMC, the project will help ease traffic congestion, improve emergency access, and strengthen connectivity to the Motera sports hub, which is central to Ahmedabad’s sports and urban development plans.
