The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to develop sports activity centres beneath nine bridges across the city as part of its efforts to promote fitness, expand sports infrastructure and strengthen Ahmedabad’s position as a leading sports destination.
AMC has already established sports activity centres under the SIMS and Ranip underbridges, offering a variety of recreational and sporting facilities for residents. Similar projects are now being planned beneath the Laxmanrao Vakil Saheb Bridge, Anjali Bridge and Ghodasar Bridge, with tenders being floated under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
In the next phase, the civic body plans to create sports facilities under the Dinesh Chamber Flyover Bridge, Guruji Over Bridge, Gujarat College Railway Over Bridge and Rajendra Park Flyover Bridge. Officials said work is being expedited to ensure wider access to sports infrastructure across different parts of the city.
The initiative aims to bring sports facilities closer to residential areas, encourage participation in sports and provide children and aspiring athletes with opportunities to train within their neighbourhoods.
The centres will cater to a range of sports and fitness activities, including cricket, football, basketball, badminton, skating and general fitness programmes. The facility developed under the SIMS Bridge features amenities such as air hockey, table tennis, chess, carrom, box cricket, pickleball, basketball, pool and foosball. Similar facilities have also been created under the Ranip underbridge. Sports equipment has been provided to make the centres accessible to people of all age groups.
According to AMC, the project will not only promote sports and healthy lifestyles but also transform underutilised urban spaces into vibrant community hubs, enhancing the city’s aesthetics and contributing to urban renewal.
To ensure safety and proper upkeep, the civic body plans to install CCTV surveillance systems, LED lighting and undertake regular maintenance of the facilities.
AMC is also exploring the organisation of local tournaments, coaching camps and sports programmes, while working on plans for new sports complexes, mini stadiums and training academies across Ahmedabad.
Officials believe the expansion of sports infrastructure will boost sports tourism, generate employment opportunities and support Ahmedabad’s long-term preparations for major international sporting events, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the proposed 2036 Olympic Games.
