Serious allegations of unofficial fee collection and rule violations have surfaced at the hostels of Ahmedabad’s NHL Medical College, with students reportedly being forced to pay extra money for facilities prohibited under hostel regulations.
According to allegations, despite official rules banning the use of air conditioners and coolers inside hostel rooms, rectors allegedly permitted students to use them in exchange for monthly payments of Rs 5,000 per student. Similar unofficial charges were reportedly collected for appliances such as refrigerators and induction stoves, with the money allegedly being taken directly by hostel authorities instead of being deposited into government accounts.
The alleged irregularities reportedly extend beyond electrical appliances. Although hostel norms require students to share rooms, those seeking single occupancy were allegedly charged an additional Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 every month. Reports also claimed that former students were being allowed to continue staying in the hostels after making similar unofficial payments. The controversy has further raised questions over administrative oversight, as hostel management committees reportedly include senior doctors and departmental heads, yet the alleged system continued unchecked for months.
The allegations have also brought attention to claims regarding easy access to alcohol inside the hostels despite Gujarat being a dry state. In January 2026, liquor bottles were allegedly found inside a girls’ hostel room. A written complaint submitted by security personnel on April 8 reportedly warned authorities about prohibited items being brought into the hostel premises. Security staff allegedly claimed they were verbally instructed by hostel officials to permit such items. Adding to the controversy, the college administration reportedly issued a public notice informing students about surprise inspections for banned items such as cigarettes, tobacco, refrigerators, and heavy appliances, effectively alerting students before the checks were conducted.
