Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has allotted 102 plots across the city for dedicated parking facilities in an effort to address rising traffic congestion and unorganised parking. The plots have been assigned to private landowners and commercial establishments exclusively for parking use to improve traffic management in busy areas.
According to AMC, the highest number of plots — 33 — has been allotted in the North-West Zone, followed by 21 in the East Zone, 18 in the North Zone, 12 each in the West and South-West zones, and six in the South Zone. Officials said the initiative is expected to reduce pressure on public roads and strengthen civic infrastructure.
At the same time, AMC has intensified its pre-monsoon preparedness drive to ensure efficient drainage and minimise water-logging during the upcoming rainy season.
As part of the campaign, the civic body is carrying out large-scale cleaning and monitoring of catch pits and storm water machine holes across all city zones.
The total number of catch pits in the city has risen to 72,586 after the addition of 6,006 new units. Zone-wise figures include 9,891 in the North Zone, 9,093 in the South Zone, 9,461 in the East Zone, 6,972 in the Central Zone, 15,777 in the West Zone, 13,791 in the North-West Zone, and 7,601 in the South-West Zone. AMC has completed desilting work for 64,013 catch pits during the first phase of cleaning.
Similarly, the number of storm water machine holes has increased to 26,685 following the construction of 2,681 new units. Their distribution includes 2,761 in the North Zone, 2,847 in the South Zone, 4,731 in the East Zone, 1,882 in the Central Zone, 3,267 in the West Zone, 7,465 in the North-West Zone, and 3,732 in the South-West Zone.
AMC officials said continuous monitoring, preventive maintenance, and quick-response systems are being put in place ahead of the monsoon. Engineering teams, storm water departments, and field staff will remain on alert to ensure rapid drainage of rainwater and prevent flooding in low-lying areas.
