The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has begun strict implementation of new waste management rules across the city following the Solid Waste Management Rules–2026 issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, along with directions issued by the Supreme Court earlier this year.
Under the revised rules, all residential and commercial establishments in Ahmedabad must now segregate waste into four categories before handing it over to door-to-door garbage collection vehicles. The four categories are wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste and “special care waste”.
Wet waste will include kitchen waste along with fruit and vegetable waste, while dry waste will cover paper, plastic, glass and metal materials. Used diapers, sanitary pads and similar items will be classified as sanitary waste and must be wrapped separately before disposal.
Hazardous household waste has been categorised as “special care waste” and must also be stored separately. AMC has warned that dumping, burning or burying waste in streets, open spaces, drains or water bodies will be treated as a legal offence.
The new rules will be applicable across all zones and wards of Ahmedabad.
The civic body has also initiated strict enforcement measures for Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs). Buildings or establishments with a built-up area of 20,000 square metres or more, daily water consumption exceeding 40,000 litres, or those generating more than 100 kg of solid waste daily will fall under the BWG category.
This includes hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, government offices, educational institutions, religious places, large residential complexes and commercial establishments.
Bulk waste generators will now be required to process biodegradable or wet waste within their own premises using on-site waste processing systems. Dry waste generated by them must be properly segregated and handed over only to authorised recyclers.
