A family from Valsad district has reportedly sought permission for euthanasia, citing severe financial hardship and emotional stress related to the medical condition of their disabled daughter.
The incident came to light from the Abrama area after a letter written by the head of the family to the district administration went viral on social media, sparking concern across South Gujarat.
According to sources, Sureshbhai Naik, a resident near Jalaram Temple, stated that his family had been struggling with prolonged financial difficulties while trying to manage treatment expenses for his disabled daughter, Ashwini, along with daily household needs.
In the letter addressed to the Valsad Collector, Naik reportedly mentioned that he, along with his wife Chitraben, son Makrand, and daughter, was no longer able to bear the financial and emotional burden. The letter allegedly expressed the family’s wish to “get rid of this life” and stated that they were prepared to face any legal consequences arising from such a decision.
Following the circulation of the letter, local police and administrative officials reportedly contacted the family.
Sources said Naik was under severe mental stress and was unwilling to speak in detail, but indicated that he planned to meet the district collector personally on Monday to present the family’s grievances.
The incident has triggered discussion in the district over whether government welfare schemes and financial aid are adequately reaching vulnerable families dealing with serious medical and economic hardships.
Under Indian law, active euthanasia is illegal. However, the Supreme Court of India has permitted passive euthanasia under specific legal and medical conditions.
