While social media is filled with Mother’s Day messages celebrating women and motherhood, official data from Ahmedabad presents a worrying picture. In 2025, the city recorded only 886 girls born for every 1,000 boys, highlighting the continuing gender imbalance despite years of awareness campaigns promoting equality and women’s empowerment.
The figures also show a steady decline in the child sex ratio over the past three years. In 2022, Ahmedabad had recorded 898 girls per 1,000 boys, indicating a drop of 12 girls since then.
Government schemes and awareness drives have consistently encouraged families to treat daughters equally and provide better opportunities for women and girls. Social workers say acceptance of girl children has improved compared to earlier decades, with many families publicly expressing support for gender equality.
However, the falling birth ratio suggests that real social attitudes still lag behind public statements about equality.
Interestingly, rural areas of Ahmedabad district continue to report a better girl-child birth ratio than the city itself, despite Ahmedabad’s rapid economic and social development over the last 50 years.
