The Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT) of the Indian Air Force will perform a special aerobatic display over the Somnath Temple on May 10 and 11 as part of the temple’s 75th anniversary celebrations.
According to a release issued by the Defence Ministry’s PRO, the six-aircraft team will showcase synchronised aerial manoeuvres using Hawk Mk-132 jet trainers along the Somnath coastline. The event is expected to attract large crowds, including tourists, aviation enthusiasts and local residents.
Formed in 1996, the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team is among the world’s few military aerobatic teams and has performed more than 800 air displays across India. The team has also represented the Indian Air Force at international air shows in countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, China and the UAE.
The Hawk aircraft used by the team are licence-manufactured in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). During performances, pilots fly in close formations while carrying out complex manoeuvres that require high precision and extensive training.
The team currently consists of 13 pilots and is led by Group Captain Ajay Dasarathi, a Su-30 MKI pilot, while Wing Commander Tejeshwar Singh serves as deputy leader.
