The health department of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has reported an increase in seasonal illnesses across the city.
In April alone, Ahmedabad recorded 642 cases of gastroenteritis, 55 cases of jaundice, and 155 cases of typhoid. There were also 30 cases of simple malaria, three cases of severe malaria, and 29 cases of dengue.
From January 1 to April 30, the city reported 1,700 cases of gastroenteritis, 258 cases of jaundice, 588 cases of typhoid, 51 cases of simple malaria, 11 cases of severe malaria, one case of cholera, and 107 cases of dengue.
To monitor water quality, AMC collected 52,420 water samples in April and carried out chlorine testing. Out of these, 13 samples had no chlorine. Another 7,382 samples were tested for bacteria, with 21 found unsafe.
The health department also tested nearly 1.39 lakh blood samples and 4,629 serum samples during the month.
In the eastern parts of the city, identified as high-risk areas, work has started to replace old drinking water pipelines. Around 29 pockets have been marked as sensitive zones due to waterborne diseases. Regular water testing is being done in these areas, and officials say cases are now starting to decline.
