The government on Sunday rejected claims that Aadhaar cards will soon be simplified to a format showing only a photograph and QR code, clarifying that no such proposal is under consideration.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said reports and social media posts suggesting a change in Aadhaar’s design are incorrect and are causing unnecessary confusion among the public.“There are intermittent reports claiming Aadhaar’s look may change by the end of this year to just a photo and a QR code. This is not correct.
There is no plan for any such changes,” the ministry said.It added that such claims are misleading and urged people to rely only on official updates from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) through verified channels and PIB releases.
Media outlets were also advised not to circulate unverified information. The clarification comes amid widespread circulation of rumours about a possible redesign of Aadhaar. The government reiterated that no decision has been taken and asked citizens to ignore misleading posts.
Aadhaar, maintained by UIDAI, is the world’s largest biometric identification system, with around 134 crore users and over 17,000 crore authentication transactions to date, playing a key role in identity verification across services.
