Ahmedabad airport plans separate road to ease VIP and private aircraft traffic

Amid a major infrastructure upgrade at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, including the construction of a new integrated terminal building, the airport operator is planning a dedicated road network to streamline traffic flow.

The proposal aims to separate general aviation (GA) and VIP movement from regular commercial passenger traffic. According to reports, a new internal road is being planned to link the Meghaninagar-side airport campus with Dafnala Circle, which could help reduce congestion near the terminal.

The airport is also considering relocating the GA and GujSail terminals to a site near the existing GSEC cargo terminal. This move is expected to free up space for expanding the main terminal infrastructure.

A dedicated road corridor connecting the relocated terminals to Dafnala is also part of the plan.Currently, all passengers—including those on commercial flights, private charters, and state aircraft—use common access routes via Dafnala, Airport Circle, Ring Road, and Hansol, often leading to heavy congestion, especially during peak hours and VIP movement.

Officials said the project is progressing as per schedule, with external road development being handled by relevant authorities. However, a major hurdle remains, as part of the proposed road alignment may pass through Army Cantonment land, requiring defence clearances.

Discussions are still at an early stage, and approvals from both government and defence authorities will be necessary before the project moves forward.
