A shocking incident from Keonjhar has gone viral, where a man carried his sister’s skeletal remains to a bank after repeated refusals to withdraw money from her account.
The incident happened on April 27 at a branch of Odisha Grameen Bank in Patana. The man, Jeetu Munda (50), had been trying to withdraw ₹20,000 from the account of his sister, who passed away in January.
According to reports, Jeetu visited the bank several times with her passbook, but officials allegedly asked him to bring the account holder in person. Frustrated, he dug up her grave and brought her remains as proof of death.
Odisha minister Suresh Pujari called the incident inhuman and said action will be taken against the bank staff.
Officials later clarified that Jeetu was unaware of legal procedures, such as nominee or legal heir requirements, which are needed to withdraw money from a deceased person’s account. Police said he acted out of frustration and lack of understanding.
After the incident, authorities assured help to complete the process, and the remains were respectfully reburied. The administration has now asked bank officials to ensure the money is released as per rules.
