Your smartphone stores everything from personal chats and passwords to banking apps, photos and sensitive data. If your phone gets hacked, acting quickly is crucial to minimise damage and regain control of your information.
Identify the warning signs
Unusual pop-ups, rapid battery drain, overheating, unfamiliar apps and suspicious account activity can indicate that your device has been compromised. Any sudden or unexplained behaviour should be treated seriously.
Disconnect the device immediately
Turn on airplane mode to cut off internet and network access. This can stop hackers from continuing to access your data or remotely control the phone.
Change important passwords
Using a secure device, immediately update passwords for email, banking, social media and cloud storage accounts. Use strong and unique passwords for better protection.
Run a malware scan
Install a trusted antivirus or mobile security app and perform a complete scan to identify and remove harmful software.
Delete suspicious apps
Review all installed applications carefully and remove any unfamiliar or suspicious apps that may have been used to gain unauthorised access.
Update your software
Ensure your phone’s operating system and apps are fully updated, as security updates often fix vulnerabilities exploited by hackers.
Factory reset if needed
If the issue persists, a factory reset may be necessary. This erases the device and removes most malware, so make sure all important data is backed up first.
Alert your contacts
Hackers may misuse your accounts to target friends and family. Inform your contacts not to respond to suspicious messages or links sent from your number or profiles.
Improve future security
Download apps only from official app stores, avoid unsecured public Wi-Fi, enable two-factor authentication and stay cautious while browsing or opening links online.
A hacked phone can be stressful, but responding quickly can significantly reduce the risk and help protect your personal information.
