After CWG 2030 and Olympic bid, city eyes Asian Games
India is planning to bring the Asian Games back to the country after many years, with a proposal to host the 2038 edition in Ahmedabad. The idea was recently discussed at a meeting of the Olympic Council of Asia in Sanya, China.
India last hosted the Asian Games in 1982 in New Delhi, while the first edition was also held there in 1951. If approved, the 2038 Games will mark the event’s return to India for the third time.
Upcoming editions are already scheduled — 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya (Japan), 2030 in Doha, and 2034 in Riyadh. India is now aiming for the next available slot in 2038, along with its strong bid to host the 2036 Olympics.
P. T. Usha, president of the Indian Olympic Association, recently met OCA chief Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani to discuss sports development and cooperation across Asia. During the meeting, India shared its vision of hosting the 2038 Asian Games and strengthening its role in global sports.
Ahmedabad has already been selected to host the Commonwealth Games 2030, marking 100 years of the event. India is also set to host the 2028 World Athletics Indoor Championships.
With multiple big sporting events planned and bids in place, Ahmedabad could soon become a major global sports hub—and perhaps see “Appu 2.0” entertaining crowds in 2038.
