Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai will be halted for six hours on May 7. The airport announced that both runways, 09/27 and 14/32, will close from 11 AM to 5 PM due to essential pre-monsoon maintenance.
Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), which is owned by the Adani Group, noted that this annual maintenance is vital for ensuring the safety and longevity of its extensive airside infrastructure, which spans over 1,000 acres. Coordinating with airlines began six months ago to help them adjust their flight schedules ahead of time.
“Our focus is on thorough inspections of runway surfaces for any wear and tear,” a spokesperson said. “This ensures we can take preventive measures for safe landings and take-offs as the monsoon approaches.”
This process will involve specialists utilizing modern machinery along with meticulous planning to monitor every aspect of maintenance. MIAL emphasized it’s committed to completing all necessary work within the allocated six-hour timeframe.
As one of India’s busiest airports, CSMIA plays a crucial role in managing air traffic and passenger movement; thus, these routine checks are essential before the heavy rains begin.
