Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority to Convert Agricultural Land for Development

Gandhinagar: The state government has approved plans for the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) to denotify approximately 36 square kilometers of land currently designated as agricultural. This move will allow for residential and commercial development in rapidly growing areas around Ahmedabad city.

According to sources, the decision is expected to be put into action shortly after local body elections, including the polls for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Key areas affected include Ognaj, Shilaj, Ghuma, Bhadaj, Lambha, Laxmipura, Kathwada, Kamod, Vanjar, Fathewadi, and Vastral—all classified under AUDA’s development plan.

“These regions are experiencing significant growth. However, restrictions due to their agricultural status could hinder proper development and might invite illegal constructions,” a source explained. The state government aims to encourage organized urban growth by lifting these restrictions.

In a related development, officials have indicated that the state has made an in-principle decision to begin acquiring land for a proposed third ring road around Ahmedabad city. AUDA intends to extend its jurisdiction to include all villages adjacent to this forthcoming outer ring road.

A formal announcement regarding this initiative is anticipated in early May. While AUDA has suggested incorporating newer villages along the route into its updated development plan (DP), final decisions will rest with higher political authorities. An official unveiling of AUDA’s new DP is likely slated for June of this year.
