Ahmedabad is set to expand its public transport fleet with the addition of four new double-decker buses, as the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) has floated tenders for the procurement of ready-built Type-II AC electric buses.
The project also includes the installation of two dedicated charging units and a Comprehensive Annual Maintenance Contract (CAMC) for 10 years or up to 10 lakh kilometres, whichever is earlier. The selected operator will be responsible for daily operations, including cleaning, upkeep, and technical maintenance, ensuring safety and reliability standards are maintained.
Key features of the new buses:
Electric propulsion: The buses will be powered by high-capacity lithium-ion or lithium iron phosphate batteries.
Operating range: Each bus will offer a minimum range of 120 km on a single charge (at 80% charge) while running full air conditioning.
Safety and technology: The fleet will be equipped with five CCTV cameras with 48-hour backup, panic buttons, and an integrated Passenger Information System (PIS).
Passenger comfort: Designed with safety and convenience in mind, the buses will feature power-operated doors and accessibility provisions for passengers with disabilities.
AMTS had reintroduced double-decker buses in the city in February 2024 after a gap of nearly 30 years.
The new additions are expected to be deployed on key routes across Ahmedabad and nearby areas, further strengthening the city’s public transport network.
