Gujarat Police has introduced ‘NARIT AI’ (Narcotics Analysis & RAG-based Investigation Tool), becoming the first in India to deploy an artificial intelligence-driven system to strengthen investigations in NDPS cases, according to an official release.
The tool is designed to assist investigating officers by providing inputs based on High Court and Supreme Court judgments. It helps ensure legal compliance, identifies weaknesses in FIRs, outlines key do’s and don’ts, prepares investigation plans, and offers a comprehensive evidence checklist—reducing the chances of procedural errors.
What the AI system does
NARIT AI analyses FIR content and generates detailed case reports. Built using advanced RAG-based AI technology, the system is trained on past High Court and Supreme Court rulings related to bail and trial in NDPS cases, along with legal provisions from BNS, BNSS, BSA, the NDPS Act, 1985, and relevant government guidelines.
Unlike open-source AI tools, NARIT AI relies solely on its trained database, eliminating the risk of inaccurate or “hallucinated” outputs. In line with Gujarat High Court guidelines, it operates as a private system exclusively for Gujarat Police and is not accessible to the public.
Support for prosecution
Beyond investigation support, the tool can anticipate possible defence arguments in court and suggest counterpoints based on established case law, helping strengthen prosecution strategies.
