The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is facing strong opposition from residents over a proposed road-widening project on Arya Samaj Road in Chandlodiya, which could affect around 1,000 homes.
Locals fear losing their houses and say many families have been living there since the nagar panchayat days. The issue has sparked anger, especially as it comes just ahead of the AMC elections scheduled on April 26.
Residents have questioned the timing of the move, saying such a major decision should not be taken during the election period.
Officials had completed demarcation work on the road nearly three months ago under a joint exercise with the Railways, and markings have already been placed for the proposed expansion.
People in the area have demanded that the scale of demolition be reduced or that alternative housing be provided. Many have raised concerns about their future if their homes are removed.
A former councillor has also taken up the issue, urging authorities to revise the plan to minimise displacement.
