Indian Embassy Issues 48-Hour Advisory for Nationals in Iran Amid Rising West Asia Tensions

Indian Embassy Issues 48-Hour Advisory for Nationals in Iran Amid Rising West Asia Tensions

The Indian Embassy in Tehran has issued a fresh advisory urging Indian nationals who remain in Iran to stay indoors and avoid movement, as a deadline set by US President Donald Trump for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz—or face a possible escalation—draws closer.

In its advisory, the embassy also asked citizens to steer clear of power grids, military installations, and upper floors of multi-storey buildings due to safety concerns.
“Indian nationals who are still in Iran must stay where they are for the next 48 hours, avoiding all electric and military installations and upper floors of multi-storey buildings, remaining indoors, and coordinating any highway movement strictly with the Embassy,” it said.

Tensions across West Asia have continued to rise following US-Israel strikes on Iran that began on February 28.

Last week, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that approximately 6.49 lakh passengers have returned to India from the region since the escalation began. The ministry emphasized that it is closely monitoring developments in the Gulf and West Asia, with a strong focus on the safety and welfare of Indian citizens living there.

On Tuesday, officials confirmed that thousands of Indian nationals have been assisted in relocating amid the ongoing conflict.

Speaking at an inter-ministerial press briefing, Additional Secretary (Gulf) Aseem R Mahajan said, “Our embassy in Tehran has so far facilitated the movement of 1,862 Indian nationals from Iran to Armenia and Azerbaijan for onward travel to India. This includes 935 Indian students and 472 Indian fishermen.”

He further stated, “The Ministry of External Affairs continues to closely monitor developments in the Gulf and West Asia region. Our efforts remain focused on ensuring the safety, security and welfare of the large Indian community in the region.”

Mahajan also highlighted coordination efforts with state governments and Union Territories, supported by a dedicated control room.

“We remain in close contact with state governments and Union Territories for sharing the latest advisories and to coordinate with our embassies and consulates. The dedicated special control room in the ministry is working in tandem with our missions and posts to support Indian nationals across the region,” he said.
