City police have launched a special drive to stop harassment and forced money collection by individuals posing as eunuchs who use intimidation tactics.
Police Commissioner GS Malik has directed officers to carry out a city-wide crackdown using covert methods to catch offenders in the act. The move follows a rise in complaints about such groups creating disturbances at social functions, crossroads, and toll plazas.
During a recent law-and-order review meeting, Malik instructed Deputy Commissioners of Police to deploy decoy operations similar to trap methods used by the Anti-Corruption Bureau. He said many citizens have reported being harassed and threatened.
“There is no issue if people accept what is willingly given. But forcing, threatening, blocking vehicles, or creating fear to demand money will not be tolerated,” Malik said, urging victims to contact the police control room for quick help.
Police have clarified that while traditional practices of giving blessings during celebrations are respected, any form of coercion or extortion in the name of such customs will lead to strict action.
Officers have also been told to register cases if people are forced to pay large amounts like ₹11,000 or ₹21,000 during events. The drive aims to maintain public order and prevent misuse of cultural traditions.
