At least 70 people from Ahmedabad’s Danilimda area were hospitalised on Tuesday after suspected food poisoning linked to a meal served at a private function, prompting authorities to order an investigation and review food safety measures.
Officials said the affected individuals experienced symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea after consuming food at a gathering near Kankaria. Of them, 46 were treated at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, 20 at a private hospital, and three at LG Hospital.
The incident was reviewed during a weekly meeting chaired by Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani, who directed strict action against unauthorised food handling and sale, especially of non-vegetarian items.
Authorities said the victims belonged to a family from Shakti Society in Danilimda and had attended a wedding where dishes such as chicken, fish, halwa, dahi vada, and buttermilk were served.
The commissioner has ordered a detailed probe to identify those responsible for improper food handling and waste disposal. Officials were also instructed to ensure that municipal party plots and public venues are not misused for unauthorised activities.
Civic officials warned that strict action will be taken against those dumping non-vegetarian waste indiscriminately, including in drainage lines, as it poses serious public health risks.
The civic body added that violators of food safety norms could face blacklisting and possible police action if public health is compromised.
