A negligence case has come to light at the 320-bed ESIC General Hospital in Ahmedabad’s Bapunagar area after caterpillar-like insects were found in food served to patients, sparking outrage among patients and their families.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in the women’s medical ward, where around 42 patients were served khichdi. Several patients reportedly noticed insects in the food, leading to panic and anger, with many refusing to eat.Hospital sources said patients raised complaints immediately after spotting the contaminated food, and the issue escalated when local representatives were informed.

Senior Councillor Iqbal Sheikh visited the hospital following the complaints and took up the matter with the Chief Medical Officer and the night superintendent, demanding prompt action.
Authorities later arranged fresh food, which was prepared and served to patients the same night.
Initial findings indicate that the hospital’s food services are outsourced to a contractor, while kitchen operations are monitored by designated staff. Concerns have been raised over possible lapses in supervision.
A formal complaint has also been sent to senior officials, including Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, seeking a detailed investigation into the incident.
