Traffic congestion has become a major concern for Ahmedabad Police, prompting authorities to roll out a series of measures to improve traffic management at key junctions, officials said.
The Commissioner of Police recently held a meeting with traffic department officers to review the situation and discuss reforms, focusing on stretches such as Narol-Pirana, Sarkhej-Juhapura, and areas around Palladium Mall.
With a steady rise in the number of vehicles and relatively narrow roads, traffic conditions in the city have deteriorated, officials noted, adding that plans have been drawn up to ease congestion at major traffic points. Traffic DCP Naresh Kanjaria has been tasked with implementing the measures.
As part of the plan, diversions have been introduced at the Pirana intersection, where bridge construction is underway. A new cut has also been opened to facilitate smoother vehicular movement, officials said.
Authorities are also considering closing some existing road cuts at multiple locations while introducing new ones to streamline traffic flow.
A survey is currently being conducted at key junctions, including Sarkhej-Juhapura Circle, Ujala Circle, Sanand Circle, Naroda Patiya Circle, Vadaj Circle, and the Palladium Mall area, to prepare a detailed action plan.
Officials said the ‘free left’ system cannot be implemented in the city at present, which has contributed to congestion. To address this, around 450 additional traffic brigade personnel will be deployed.
Signal timings at some intersections have also been increased and are expected to be rationalised in due course as part of ongoing efforts to ease congestion, they added.
