Two people were killed and nine others injured after LPG cylinder blasts triggered by a fire at an embroidery unit in Surat’s Kapodra area early Thursday morning around 5:30 am.
The incident occurred on the third floor of a building near Rachna Circle, where multiple cylinders were stored. While fire officials said the blaze led to explosions, preliminary reports have suggested possible illegal gas refilling. Fire tenders rushed to the spot, rescued those trapped, and shifted victims to hospital. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause.
According to officials, the fire intensified rapidly after at least one cylinder exploded before firefighters arrived. A total of eight cylinders were present at the site. Rescue teams broke through a sheet covering the floor to evacuate those inside. The injured were admitted to Smeimer Hospital for treatment.
Preliminary findings indicate the possibility of illegal LPG refilling activity, though officials are yet to confirm this. The incident has raised concerns over unsafe storage and handling of gas cylinders in densely populated areas, as investigations continue.
