VADODARA — A shortage of LPG cylinders has hit the Railway Rolling Stock Workshop canteen in Dahod, forcing it to shut down for nearly four days. The canteen, which usually serves around 150 workers daily with subsidized meals, was unable to provide services due to the unavailability of gas cylinders.
On Monday, after a brief hiatus, the canteen reopened its doors. But there’s a catch: without LPG, staff have had to resort to cooking on traditional wood-fired stoves. This shift is quite unusual for a major railway establishment that generally relies on modern cooking facilities.
The Dahod workshop boasts a long history, having been established during the British era in 1931. It has evolved over time—once underutilized and now upgraded for electric locomotive manufacturing. Just last year, it produced its first 9,000-HP locomotive for Indian Railways.
The disruption caused by the LPG shortage not only affected meal services but also forced employees to seek food from outside sources, often at a higher price. “This isn’t how we expected our workday to go,” commented one worker who wished to remain anonymous.
