UGC Pushes for Enhanced SWAYAM Course Integration in Higher Education

UGC Pushes for Enhanced SWAYAM Course Integration in Higher Education

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken a major step to boost the SWAYAM initiative, urging universities to align their academic programs with available Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for the July 2026 semester. This move aims at facilitating credit transfers for students enrolled in these online courses.

So, what’s the plan? The Ministry of Education has instructed UGC to carry out a demand-based mapping exercise in collaboration with various universities. The goal is simple: ensure that future SWAYAM courses meet the specific academic needs of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across India.

In its circular, UGC requested universities to thoroughly examine their current curricula and compare them against the list of SWAYAM offerings. Institutions are expected to provide detailed feedback on several factors, including how much of their curriculum aligns with available SWAYAM courses, credit requirements, preferred languages for instruction, and whether courses target undergraduate or postgraduate students.

But that’s not all. Universities are also asked to classify appropriate disciplines—spanning STEM fields, Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce, Management, Agriculture, and Environmental Studies—among others. They can even recommend which courses should be repeated in future semesters or identify critical subjects currently missing from SWAYAM that would benefit their students.

The feedback gathered will be compiled and shared with SWAYAM National Coordinators. This will help them refine existing offerings and design new relevant courses tailored to institutional needs.
