Vadodara is set for a major infrastructure upgrade. The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) plans to construct a new bridge over the Sama–Savli canal aimed at easing traffic congestion on the busy Sama–Savli Road.
This project comes on the heels of an ongoing bridge construction near Abacus Circle, which has been a subject of political debate. Originally, there were calls to extend that bridge all the way up to Kudavi McDonald’s, but differing opinions among local leaders resulted in limiting its length to around 560 metres.
The ongoing bridge will conclude near the Satva Avenue three-road junction and directly across from a petrol pump serving SAIL Company. However, just beyond this junction, traffic bottlenecks occur as roads split off toward Vemali and Sama. This intersection also connects with the Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway, making it prone to heavy traffic at all hours, particularly during peak times and wedding seasons when several party plots are nearby.
Recognizing these ongoing issues, VMC officials have decided that another bridge is necessary. A comprehensive traffic survey and visibility assessment will precede further project details. Earlier discussions had suggested joining the Abacus Circle bridge with an extension across the canal for seamless travel toward the expressway; however, that idea didn’t go forward.
Now, city planners hope this new structure will not only alleviate congestion but also enhance connectivity overall. In addition to the new bridge plans, VMC has started efforts to widen roads near where they narrow by the canal. Conversations are underway with the Sardar Sarovar Corporation regarding this road-widening initiative.
