L D College of Engineering to get ₹194 crore revamp; ₹430-crore plan aims for IIT-style upgrade
Despite its long-pending demand for autonomy and university status, L D College of Engineering has received a major boost in the state budget. The government has allocated ₹194 crore for 2026-27 as part of an ambitious plan to transform the campus on the lines of the Indian Institutes of Technology.
Of this year’s outlay, ₹51 crore will be used to set up a state-of-the-art research park. Another ₹49 crore has been sanctioned for the extension of the electrical building, while ₹28 crore will fund a new gymkhana. The computer building will get modular furniture worth ₹11.93 crore, ₹2 crore has been earmarked for online data science courses, and ₹5.64 crore will be spent on drainage works. Two new boys’ hostel blocks will also be built at a cost of ₹23.32 crore each.
These allocations are part of the state government’s five-year commitment of ₹430 crore to the institute. The larger plan includes ₹151 crore for the research park and ₹102 crore each for two hostel blocks. Principal Nilay Bhuptani said ₹194 crore will be released this year.
He added that the proposed research park will be the first of its kind among state government engineering colleges and will help bring industry closer to students, creating opportunities for undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD scholars.
