The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approved a 63.23-crore project to replace worn-out bearings on six railway overbridges, some of which are more than 60 years old.
The decision follows inspections carried out after the Gambhira bridge tragedy, during which a consultant’s report found that the bearings of six bridges were severely damaged and posed safety risks due to heavy traffic and frequent movement of large vehicles. The report recommended urgent replacement.
To minimise traffic disruption during the work, AMC plans to install Bailey structures along with proper signage and traffic marshals so that light vehicles can continue to move. The project will include the installation of modern elastomeric bearings.
The bridges identified for repair are Girdharnagar, Chamunda, Cadila, Nathalal Jhagda, Chandlodia and Chimanbhai Patel railway overbridges.
