In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Ahmedabad Customs seized 6.8 kg of heroin valued at ₹34 crore from a passenger at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, officials said.
The passenger, who arrived from Kuala Lumpur on an AirAsia flight on February 9, was intercepted based on profiling. During a detailed check of his baggage, Customs officers found 29 packets of suspected narcotics cleverly concealed inside boxes designed to look like natural and herbal soap bars. Although the packaging appeared genuine, the boxes contained only the contraband. Three additional envelopes containing the substance were also recovered.
Officials said the packets were wrapped in multiple layers of silver foil and carbon paper to avoid detection during X-ray screening. Preliminary testing confirmed the substance to be heroin, with a total weight of 6.8 kg.
Authorities believe the concealment method indicates the involvement of an organised international drug trafficking network. The drugs have been seized under the NDPS Act, 1985, and the passenger has been arrested. Further investigation is underway to trace the source of the narcotics, identify intended recipients, and examine possible links with international syndicates.
