After Rajkot and Jamnagar, the play ‘Hun Nathuram’, based on Nathuram Godse, has triggered controversy in Ahmedabad, leading to strong political reactions and street protests.
Members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and the Youth Congress have opposed the staging of the play, holding demonstrations in areas such as Bodakdev and Sindhubhavan Road. The play is scheduled to be performed on February 9 at the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium on Sindhubhavan Road.
Ahead of the event, NSUI workers protested near the auditorium, writing slogans such as “Godse murdabad” and “Gandhiji amar raho” on walls. Protesters said any attempt to glorify Nathuram Godse on Gandhian soil would not be accepted, and some activists were also seen symbolically blackening photographs of Godse.
Despite the protests, tickets for the play continue to be sold online. NSUI and Youth Congress have demanded that the programme be cancelled and warned of intensified protests if the show proceeds.
In view of the earlier protests in Saurashtra and the tense atmosphere in Ahmedabad, police are likely to increase security around the venue to prevent any law-and-order issues.
