The Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) has proposed allocating 62% of its total budget to infrastructure development as part of efforts to accelerate the city’s transformation into a modern urban centre under the Urban Development Year initiative.
Municipal Commissioner JN Vaghela on Friday presented the ₹1,903.08-crore budget for 2026-27, reflecting a 10.77% increase over the previous year. Of the total outlay, ₹1,186.71 crore has been earmarked for capital expenditure. The budget proposes no increase in property or vehicle taxes, and the 10% early payment rebate on property tax has been extended from two months to three months.
To strengthen public transport and reduce pollution, GMC plans to introduce 100 new PM e-buses in the coming year. Key infrastructure projects include construction of an underpass at Sector 22-23, a flyover between Reliance Chowk and Pandit Deendayal Circle, development of 350 km of new roads, and 26,000 additional drainage connections.
The budget also focuses on environmental initiatives, including planting over 10 lakh trees, developing an 8-km Green Corridor, rejuvenating 19 existing lakes, and creating 24 new lakes to eliminate waterlogging across the city.
Funds have also been allocated for social infrastructure such as a multi-specialty hospital, sports complexes, yoga studios, community halls and new fire stations, along with improved road and fire safety measures. Plans are also in place to develop Ambapur Vav as a tourism destination and establish “Swadeshi markets” to promote local artisans and entrepreneurship.
