A 21-year-old final-year student of LD Arts College was found dead at the Gujarat University guest house on Friday while attending an NSS camp. The student, identified as Maheshwari Khachar, was staying at the guest house opposite the NRI Hostel as part of the camp arrangements.
According to initial reports, she was found hanging from a window grill, allegedly using her dupatta. Maheshwari, a resident of Botad currently living in the Ranip area, had been actively involved in NSS activities and had recently been appointed a senior volunteer for her performance and discipline.
On Friday afternoon, she attended a university programme at Shyam Prasad Mukherjee Hall and left around 3 pm. When she did not return, a concerned professor asked another student to check on her at the guest house. The student discovered her hanging near the window and immediately informed fellow volunteers, faculty members, the 108 ambulance service, and Gujarat University police.
Police have sent the body for postmortem and are questioning friends, volunteers, and staff members to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials said no note has been recovered so far, and the exact reason for the death is yet to be established. The case has been registered as an accidental death, and further investigation is underway.
