In a major push towards eco-friendly rail travel, Indian Railways has introduced the country’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered DEMU train in Ahmedabad. The move is expected to reduce harmful emissions and lower fuel costs.
As part of the project, two Driving Power Cars (DPCs) — the engine coaches with the driver’s cabin — each producing 1,400 horsepower, have been converted to operate on a diesel-LNG dual-fuel system.
Railway officials said the new system will result in significant savings while maintaining performance. Divisional Railway Manager Ved Prakash said that the use of LNG helps cut fuel consumption and emissions, reinforcing Indian Railways’ commitment to greener and more sustainable operations, while also reducing operating expenses.
