CG Road work stopped after road width cut to 9 metres

CG Road work stopped after road width cut to 9 metres

The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Wednesday stopped work on the C G Road Development Project after it was found that an 18-metre-wide road had been reduced to just nine metres.

The stretch between Mithakhali Junction and Girish Coldrinks, being redeveloped under the Mithakhali and Low Garden Precinct project, was narrowed by the contractor, Skyway Infra Project. Footpaths and related infrastructure were made wider than the road itself, despite the project—estimated to cost around ₹9 crore—being approved for an 18-metre-wide road.

Deputy Mayor Jatin Patel and standing committee chairman Devang Dani inspected the site on Wednesday morning and ordered an immediate halt to the work after noticing the changes.

Civic officials admitted that the contractor altered the road width during construction near the Sardar Patel Seva Samaj Hall on C G Road, and that the deviation was not stopped in time by concerned municipal officers.

AMC officials said the approved design had different layouts along the stretch. From Mithakhali Junction to the Sardar Patel Seva Samaj Hall crossroads, the plan provided for a nine-metre-wide carriageway, a 1.2-metre multi-utility zone, a two-metre footpath on the right side and 2.3 metres for on-street parking. From the crossroads to Girish Coldrinks, the design proposed a nine-metre-wide carriageway with a 1.2-metre footpath on the left.

The issue came to light after office bearers visited the site following complaints about the narrowed road. Opposition leaders have demanded that AMC engineers closely monitor work on site instead of depending only on consultants, alleging negligence in project supervision.
