The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to spend around ₹30 lakh to procure dog kennels for capturing and isolating aggressive and infected stray dogs across Ahmedabad.
Stray dogs identified as aggressive or diseased from various parts of the city will be housed in these kennels. Official estimates suggest Ahmedabad has nearly 2.10 lakh stray dogs.
The decision follows a 2019 random survey of stray dogs and subsequent directions from the Supreme Court, which ordered the removal of stray dogs from public places such as educational institutions, hospitals, bus terminals and other sensitive areas.
Stray dogs are commonly spotted at locations including the Gita Mandir bus terminal, government hospitals and educational campuses.
Officials said the new guidelines will come into effect about two weeks after the Supreme Court’s order. As per the rules, stray dogs caught from government offices and other public premises will also be shifted to designated shelters.
At present, the civic body does not have sufficient facilities to house large numbers of stray dogs. To bridge this gap, AMC is developing a new dog shelter in Vastral at a cost of ₹1.30 crore, with capacity for about 250–300 dogs. Additional shelters are also being planned in Lambha and Naroda, officials said.
