One person died and three others were critically injured after a speeding SUV rammed head-on into a Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) bus on the Vaishnodevi Bridge along SG Highway in Ahmedabad late on Saturday night.
The collision was so forceful that the Toyota Fortuner was completely crushed, with debris strewn across the bridge. Chilling CCTV footage that surfaced later shows the SUV speeding moments before crashing into the oncoming bus, sending shockwaves through the area.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the SUV was travelling at an extremely high speed when the driver lost control near a curve on the bridge and veered into the opposite lane, colliding with the ST bus. Both vehicles suffered severe damage to their front sections.
Police said one occupant of the SUV died on the spot, while three others were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Several bus passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated with first aid at the scene.
Police, ambulances and other emergency teams reached the spot shortly after the accident and carried out rescue and clearance operations. Traffic on the Vaishnodevi Bridge was disrupted for a long time as authorities removed the wreckage and restored vehicular movement.
A case of accidental death has been registered, and investigators are analysing the CCTV footage to establish the exact sequence of events. Overspeeding is suspected to be the main cause, though further investigation is underway.
