To prevent wastage of medical education opportunities, the Gujarat High Court has directed authorities to conduct an additional admission round to fill three vacant first-year MBBS seats for the 2025–26 academic year.
The order was passed by Justice Nirzar S. Desai on January 6 while hearing a petition filed by the Medguj Association of Gujarat Medical Colleges. The association had sought directions to the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and the Admission Committee for Professional Undergraduate Medical Courses to allot the vacant seats to eligible candidates based on merit.
Earlier, the petitioner had informed the court that 57 MBBS seats were likely to remain vacant due to the absence of further counselling rounds. Following the court’s intervention, the authorities conducted fourth and fifth rounds of counselling, successfully filling those seats. However, three seats became vacant again after students withdrew their admissions, prompting the present petition.
While acknowledging that medical admissions are governed by strict rules and timelines, Justice Desai observed that leaving seats vacant serves no purpose, especially at a time when there is a shortage of qualified doctors. The court has directed the authorities to complete this final round of admissions at the earliest.
