A new parking policy at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad has triggered strong reactions from passengers after authorities introduced an additional ₹100 charge for those paying parking fees in cash.
The revised system, aimed at promoting digital payments, requires motorists who opt for cash payment to pay ₹100 more than the standard parking fee. This decision has drawn criticism from travellers and their families, many of whom have called the charge unfair.
Passengers dropping off relatives for international flights say they often depend on private vehicles due to heavy luggage, making them more affected by the new rule.
Earlier, parking charges were ₹50 for 30 minutes and ₹80 for one hour. Under the new policy, however, a 30-minute parking paid in cash now costs ₹150, while a one-hour stay requires ₹180—more than double the earlier rates.
Travellers have also complained about other strict measures, including a ₹500 fine for losing a parking coupon or ticket, which they say adds to their inconvenience.
Parking-related disputes have surfaced repeatedly at the airport, with passengers alleging that revenue generation is being prioritised over public convenience. The extra 100 “cash handling charge” has sparked debates on social media and within the airport, with many demanding that the rule be scrapped.
