The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Friday conducted a demolition drive near Delhi Darwaza, removing unauthorised extensions built by shop owners. The action was carried out amid tight police bandobast, with Shahpur police deployed to maintain law and order.
Civic officials said the drive targeted shops that had encroached on public land by constructing illegal structures. All unauthorised portions were dismantled during the operation.
An AMC official clarified that only illegal extensions were removed and no action was taken against approved parts of the shops. The drive, officials said, is part of AMC’s ongoing campaign to curb encroachments in congested areas of the old city.
The operation attracted the attention of local traders and residents, but no untoward incident was reported. Police personnel remained present throughout to ensure the smooth conduct of the demolition.
AMC authorities added that similar drives will be carried out in other areas to remove illegal constructions and improve traffic movement and public safety.
