Pet dog registration in Ahmedabad continues to remain low despite mandatory rules and an extended deadline. Only 18,692 pet dogs have been registered in the past year, even though the city’s estimated pet dog population exceeds 50,000.
In response to the poor turnout, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has extended the registration deadline to March 31, 2026.
Pet dog registration, vaccination and compliance norms came into force on January 1, 2025. The registration fee, which was initially set at ₹200 per dog, has since been raised sharply to ₹2,000.
AMC officials said non-cooperation from pet owners remains a major challenge, particularly in the wake of recent dog attack incidents, including a fatal case involving a child.
Registration data shows Labradors top the list of registered breeds, followed by German Shepherds and Shih Tzus. Meanwhile, the civic body has had to reissue tenders for a stray dog population survey after receiving no response in the earlier round.
