Drainage overflow near SG Highway has triggered concern as the Jasapur Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) struggles to handle excess inflow. The plant, located close to SG Highway, is receiving sewage from newly added areas of Gandhinagar such as Vavol, Sargasan, Kudasan and Raysan.
Officials said the volume of incoming sewage has crossed the plant’s treatment capacity, leading to overflow of untreated wastewater. The excess drainage is spilling into nearby open land, posing serious environmental and public health risks.
₹189.58 crore STP project delayed
To address the issue, the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation had floated a ₹189.58 crore tender that includes setting up a new 100 MLD sewage treatment plant, construction of a new pumping station, augmentation of the existing pumping station, and five years of operation and maintenance.
The tender was expected to be finalised in July, but revisions in tender conditions led to delays. While the price bid has now been opened, final approval is still awaited.
After approval, construction of the new STP is likely to take around two years. As a result, areas along SG Highway and nearby localities may continue to face drainage overflow problems for at least the next two years.
