The Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) will introduce a new fleet of technology-enabled electric air-conditioned buses in the first week of January 2026, aiming to improve safety and promote eco-friendly public transport.
Officials said 15 electric AC buses have already been delivered out of the total 225 ordered. The remaining buses will arrive in phases, with around 20 buses supplied every month. Once deployed, they will run on major routes across the city.
Advanced fire safety system
To address safety concerns related to electric vehicles, each bus is equipped with an automatic fire suppression system in the battery compartment. If the battery overheats or a short circuit occurs, the system activates automatically and controls the fire at the source, reducing risk to passengers.
Strong cyber security features
As the buses operate on digital systems, AMTS has added cybersecurity protection to prevent hacking or unauthorised access. The software is secured with digital protection systems similar to antivirus programs, and annual digital audits will be conducted to detect any threats.
Passenger-friendly safety features
The buses come with several safety and convenience features. They will not move unless all doors are properly closed, and real-time tracking will allow control rooms to monitor their movement. Each bus is fitted with three CCTV cameras, with live visuals available near the driver’s seat.
For emergencies, SOS buttons have been installed to alert the driver immediately. Emergency exit gates with breakable glass panels and safety hammers are also provided for quick evacuation.
Audible alerts for pedestrians
Since electric buses are nearly silent, an alert sound will be generated when the vehicle moves below 20 km per hour to warn pedestrians and nearby vehicles. A STOP button inside the bus will allow passengers to signal the driver when needed, especially during emergencies.
No upfront cost for AMTS
The buses have been procured under a per-kilometre operating model in partnership with Aero Eagle Company. AMTS will not pay any upfront cost and will instead pay based on the distance covered by the buses.
With the launch of these electric AC buses, AMTS aims to modernise public transport, cut carbon emissions and enhance passenger safety and comfort. More details on routes and services will be announced after the official launch.
