New Year’s Eve Security Tightened in Ahmedabad With 9,000 Cops, Thousands of Cameras

With large crowds expected across Ahmedabad to welcome the New Year, the city police have announced an extensive law-and-order, traffic and surveillance plan for the night of December 31. More than 9,000 personnel will be deployed, supported by thousands of cameras and specialised teams, to ensure safe and orderly celebrations.

According to a media report, senior police officials said major public locations including the Sabarmati Riverfront, Sardar Patel Ring Road, C G Road in Navrangpura, S G Highway, Sindhu Bhavan Road, Satellite, Sola, Vastrapur, Anandnagar, Ellisbridge, Gaekwad Haveli, Maninagar and Amraiwadi are expected to see heavy footfall. Large gatherings are also anticipated at churches, markets, shopping malls, clubs, hotels, farmhouses and private party plots across the city.

Police estimates suggest that nearly 9,040 locations and facilities will be used for New Year-related events and gatherings.

Massive Deployment Across Ranks

To manage crowds and maintain public order, Ahmedabad City Police have deployed a total of 9,040 personnel. The deployment includes five officers of Joint Commissioner of Police/Additional Commissioner of Police rank, 16 Deputy Commissioners of Police, 28 Assistant Commissioners of Police and 115 Police Inspectors. The force also comprises nearly 5,000 PSI-level officers, 225 head constables and constables, two companies of the State Reserve Police (SRP), and around 3,500 Home Guards.

Senior officers from the DCP, ACP and PI ranks will remain on the streets until 1 am to directly supervise law-and-order and traffic arrangements.

Surveillance, Technology and Quick Response

Surveillance and rapid response form a key part of the security plan. More than 4,000 CCTV cameras will be used to monitor sensitive and crowded areas. Additionally, 2,560 body-worn cameras, including 238 life body-worn cameras, have been deployed to ensure transparency during crowd control and policing operations.

The city police have also positioned nine Quick Response Teams (QRTs), four Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) teams and 123 ‘112 Janrakshak’ PCR vans across Ahmedabad. Traffic enforcement will be strengthened with 39 speed gun cameras and 34 additional enforcement units.

To curb drunk driving, 443 breath analysers have been deployed, and police said strict action is being taken against motorists found driving under the influence. Enforcement teams are also targeting high-speed driving, bike stunts and hit-and-run incidents linked to intoxicated driving.

Checkpoints and Patrolling

Vehicle checks are underway at 14 inter-district checkposts and 63 checkpoints within city limits to prevent the movement of liquor, drugs and other intoxicants. Police are also closely monitoring known bootleggers, criminals, anti-social elements, history-sheeters and suspected illegal immigrants.

Seventy-one ‘She Teams’ have been formed to patrol crowded areas continuously and take immediate action against harassment of women and obscene behaviour in public places.

Teams from the Crime Branch and the Special Operations Group (SOG) are conducting inspections at hotels, dhabas, guest houses, clubs, farmhouses and other venues hosting late-night celebrations.

Traffic Restrictions and Standby Orders

To ensure smooth traffic flow, the city police have issued a notification enforcing traffic restrictions from 6 pm on December 31, 2025, to 3 am on January 1, 2026, particularly around celebration hotspots and congested routes. Alternative routes have been announced to reduce inconvenience to commuters.

A citywide standby has also been enforced across the police force from 6 pm on December 31 to allow swift reinforcement wherever required.

“December 31 and the New Year are a time of joy and celebration for all of us. Ahmedabad Police is fully equipped to keep your joy safe,” a senior police official said, appealing to citizens to cooperate with authorities and follow traffic and safety regulations.
