The Gujarat High Court has made double-sided printing mandatory for all legal documents in an effort to standardise court filings and reduce paper usage across the state’s judicial system.
In a circular dated December 22, 2025, Registrar General Sanjay D. Suthar directed all District Judiciary units to adopt A4-size paper with printing on both sides for every category of legal paperwork. The fresh directive, which supersedes earlier instructions issued in October, will come into force from January 1, 2026.
Approved by the Chief Justice on the recommendation of the Gujarat High Court and District Judiciary Rules Committees, the mandate applies to pleadings, petitions, affidavits, applications, memoranda of appeals, as well as orders and judgments issued by district courts.
The move aims to manage the large volume of paperwork generated in legal proceedings while significantly cutting down paper consumption. As per the guidelines, legal practitioners and court staff must use high-quality A4 paper with a minimum weight of 75 GSM. The prescribed format includes margins of 4 cm on the left and right, and 2 cm on the top and bottom, with 1.5 line spacing. Quotations and indented text may be in single spacing.
The circular also standardises fonts. Gujarati documents must be typed in Lohit Gujarati, Noto Sans Gujarati, or Noto Serif Gujarati at font size 13. English documents must use Times New Roman at font size 14, while quotations in both languages should be in font size 12.
