Ahmedabad has kicked off preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with the municipal corporation planning major upgrades such as model roads, a modern civic centre and several new fire stations.
During a weekly review meeting, Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani directed all departments to speed up work. He raised concerns about complaints from foreign visitors regarding mosquitoes and instructed the health department to act quickly to protect the city’s image.
The newly decongested Bhadra Plaza will be developed as a venue for public programmes, while heritage promotion will be intensified through BRTS buses. Pani also ordered a clean-up and decongestion drive around Kalupur Railway Station, aiming to turn it into a model station before the Games. Plantation work along the high-speed rail corridor will also be prioritised.
A model civic centre that will offer all AMC services under one roof has been proposed. Departments have been asked to publish details of ongoing civic projects online for public transparency.
Additionally, Ahmedabad will get 15 new fire stations in 2026–27, including a centrally located model station. The city currently has 19 functional fire stations, with three more under construction and four already sanctioned.
