Govt-Backed ‘Bharat Taxi’ to Launch in January

The government-backed ride-hailing service Bharat Taxi will officially launch in January 2026, aiming to compete with private players like Ola, Uber and Rapido.

The service will be run by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Ltd., a multi-state cooperative meant to empower drivers and offer affordable, reliable transport, Cooperation Minister Amit Shah told the Lok Sabha.

Shah said Bharat Taxi is built on cooperation, transparency and shared ownership, and will serve as a people-first alternative to existing apps. Over 37,000 drivers have already registered as of November.

A soft launch took place on Nov. 10 at Delhi Airport, followed by the rollout of the driver app in Delhi (Nov. 13) and Rajkot, Gujarat (Nov. 26).

Key features include simple app-based booking, transparent fares, vehicle tracking, multilingual support, verified onboarding, 24/7 customer service, and enhanced safety.

With a zero-commission model, drivers will keep full earnings from each ride, while cooperative profits will be shared among them. Transparent pricing will benefit both drivers and passengers.

The cooperative is promoted by major national bodies including NCDC, IFFCO, NABARD, KRIBHCO, Amul, NAFED, NDDB and National Cooperative Exports Ltd.
