The completion of the new Subhash Bridge RTO building has been delayed yet again, forcing the RTO to continue operating from a rented facility it has used for the past seven years.
According to RTO sources, the Road and Building Department has issued a notice to the construction firm for repeatedly missing deadlines.
The Subhash Bridge RTO currently functions from rented premises at a monthly cost of ₹14 lakh. Construction of the new building began in 2021 with a sanctioned budget of ₹55 crore and was awarded to Jyoti Infratech Pvt Ltd. Though the structure was initially slated for completion by late 2024, the project has faced continuous delays.
The previous building was in poor condition and unable to handle the growing workload. The RTO receives 700–800 visitors daily for services such as licences, vehicle registration, challans and track tests.
Repeated delays
A senior Transport Department official said that despite the department spending lakhs in rent, the contractor has consistently failed to meet targets.
“The earlier deadline of August 2024 was extended to December 2024, yet the building remained unfinished. Later deadlines—August 2025 and December 2025—were also missed, with reasons ranging from pending furniture work to delays in installing the electric sub-station,” the official said.
“With the December 2025 deadline now missed as well, the new completion date has been set for January 15, 2026. After a complaint from the Subhash Bridge RTO, the Transport Department alerted the Road and Building Department, which then issued a notice to Jyoti Infratech Pvt Ltd,” the official added.
